the Easter Bunny was here!

Aiden - when he first realized that the Easter Bunny had hidden Easter eggs throughout Nana Beth and Bobba Steve's backyard.

CHECK IT OUT BOBBA STEVE!

I SCORED SOME CANDY FROM THE EASTER BUNNY!!!

As soon as he found an egg, he'd open it, take out the treat inside, and stuff it in his mouth or in his pocked. He reminded me of a chipmunk finding and hording nuts.

Sky didn't really care much for the egg hunt. She'd simply go to Aiden for a bite of whatever candy treat he had just taken out of a found egg and then she'd go back to playing with something else.

When Aiden noticed that Sky only had one egg in her basket, he immediately started to collect eggs for her. At the end, he had collected more eggs in her basket than his own....that gives me a lump in my throat.

Aiden's basket...as you can see, he collected far less eggs in his own basket.

the backyardigans

Aiden and Sky swinging in Nana Beth and Bobba Steve's neighbor's playground. What can be more fun than playing in a new (to them) playground? This playground was located in a neighbor's backyard. The kids that lived at the house were out of town so Aiden and Sky got the whole place to themselves.

Aiden has learned the "pirate dance" at school. It is just adorable when he does it because he takes himself so seriously as if the moves are all so carefully executed.

Aiden and Sky just chillin' with Nana Beth.

I didn't think Aiden would attempt to cross the creek but he proved me wrong within the first 10 seconds. He crossed the creek and started to climb up the bank.

Check out his dirtly little jeans....that's my rough and tough boy!

Aiden playing the creek that Daddy, Uncle Ben, Uncle Caleb and Aunt Meghan played in probably 25 years ago. Creeks can be an endless source of fun kids. I remember when I was little I could be occupied at the creek for an entire day - pretending I was fishing, throwing/skipping rocks, catching crayfish, horsing around in the water, testing my hand crafted toy boats, etc etc.

Playing with Daddy’s Trucks

Aiden you came to visit Bobba Steve and me for Easter. You remembered we had lots of Tonka construction trucks in the shed so you helped me get them out. I sat in the sand with you near the swing set and we lined them all up. I asked you what we should build and immediately you knew.

“A road.”

“Where will the road go?”

“From here to over there,” you pointed toward the cow pasture.

“What can I do to help?”

“You need to pick up the sticks and nuts (acorns) and put them in the dump truck to make it smooth.”

“Good idea.” I got to my work and you got to yours.

“So why do we have to build this road?”

“It’s a new faster road to get here from my house.”

“Great idea because the old road take about four hours and that’s a long time.”

“It’s too far, that’s why. Now we have a fast road.”

“How long will it take to drive on this new fast road?”

“Watch this.” You pushed her scraper very fast across the length of the sand and proudly said, “This fast.”

“Great, so you can come more often to visit me, right?”

“Yes I can. When I’m bigger I will drive myself.”

“Will you have your own car?”

“I will have a motorcycle and Sky will ride on back.”

“Oh please don’t come on a motorcycle. I like cars better.”

“You want me to drive a COW?” You made a funny face and started to laugh.

“No, I want you drive a CAR.” Then I laughed

“I can’t drive a car yet, I can only drive a scooter.”

I’m so glad we got THAT settled!

Driving the Backhoe

We went to visit the site of the new house Bobba Steve and I are building. It was very muddy and you got a little bored walking around having to hold someone’s hand. There were many hazardous places where a three-year-old could get hurt. I led you up to the backhoe that was parked near the road away from danger at the top of the hill.

You climbed up into the cab, like the agile monkey-boy you are, and immediately sat in the seat. I climbed into the cab from the other side.

“Well, Mr. Backhoe operator what work do you have to do today?”

“I have to dig more holes for your house to plant trees.”

That was a great idea! You took the wheel and turned to the left and turned to the right. In your mind we were moving.

“See the bucket there is full of water.” It had rained the night before, thus all the mud and the full bucket. “It has water in it because I was digging water.”

“Why were you digging water?”

“When Sky and me come in the summer we will swim in your water (the creek). I want to dig the water so everyone will fit in there.”

(From all the way up at our house the creek looks smaller than it is.)

“I am glad you thought to dig it out some more. You are very kind to think of fitting us all in there. We will splash and go fishing and have great fun.”

You pressed some buttons and tried to move some levers. Nothing actually worked, except in your mind.

“See this black tube, that’s where you put in the gas and it goes to the engine back there.”

“Why is the engine in the back? Most engines are in the front.”

“Because it’s a backhoe, that means the engine is back there.”

That makes sense to me.

Just then a big black crow landed on the bucket, frightening you for a second. You didn’t miss a beat with your story.

“See this button here?” You pointed to a random button.

“When you press this button a cracker comes of here,” and you pointed to the ashtray. “Then you feed the bird with it and it flies away.”

I asked if we could try it and you explained that it was broken and had run out of crackers. In a few moments the crow flew off.

“I guess the bird wasn’t very hungry,” I said. “Tell me how does a boy like you know how to drive a backhoe, where the engine, where the gas goes and that it has a cracker button. Does Sky know these things too?”

You turned the wheel and I know the little wheel was turning in your head too.

“Sky doesn’t know yet. I will show her how to do everything. When she’s three she will be very smart too.”

You are always thinking of others and want to include your sister in all you do. There can be no better brother and no better backhoe operator that you my dear, sweet Aiden!

roanoke farmers' market

On Saturday morning we to the farmers' market in downtown Roanoke. We browsed through the selection of fruit, vegetables, home made baked goods, flowers, and crafts.

Sky always makes a point to stop and smell the flowers.

While Aiden and Sky listened to a story read by "the rabbit lady" under Nana Beth and Bobba Steve's watch, Adam and I slipped away to Mill Mountain Coffee for a little treat and caffeine pick-me-up. If you haven't been to Mill Mountain, I highly recommend you stop in when you're in Roanoke or Blacksburg,Virginia.

Aiden: Mommy, mommy, the rabbit lady gave me candy too.

Me: Wow. What a nice Easter rabbit.

Aiden: No, no. She was just a lady, a rabbit lady. She's not the Easter rabbit.

Me: Oh, right. Okay, she was just the rabbit lady.

Aiden: Yeah she read a book and I didn't sit on the ground 'cause my pants will get dirty. I sat on the mat. The rabbit lady had lots and lots of mats.

Check out this car. The entire car was covered with marbles, bottle caps, and button. Aiden asked the most appropriate question "why'd they do that?".

daddy's old toys

Nana Beth brought out Adam's old toys for Aiden and Sky to play with...how is it that these old toys are so much better than the toys you can buy at the store today? I'm not kidding. You can't buy toys like this if you tried. Well, at least not at Target...that's the only place I buy toys for the kids.

Nana Beth is a master when it comes to engaging kids in conversation or activity. She talks to kids in a way that is so calming, engaging, and encouraging that even 100 mph-Aiden calms down chills out. Aiden is like puddy in her hands. I'm not exactly sure how she does it but I think it has to do with her calm nature, her willingness to get down (physically) to the kid's level, and the earnest conversations she holds with kids.

Aiden loved the tractor, the bulldozer, the cement mixer, and the dump truck. He was paving a road, shoveling dirt, and digging holes...what fun!

Building roads is in his blood, people.

Sky turns 21....months that is!

So Sky turned twenty-one months old today. She's getting to be such a big girl. She's remarkably independent for age.

At play...she is just as comfortable playing with other kids as she is playing by herself. She's willing to share her toys and knows how to be nice enough to another kid to get them to share their toys. She has two playmates Sophia and Christian whom she plays with a couple of times a week.

At the dinner table...she's very coordinated using the spoon and fork. Don't even try to help her put a bite into her mouth she will resist. It's as if she gets offended if you try to feed her.

At bed time...she asks me to read four or five books while sitting on my lap in our rocking chair. When we finish with the books, she puts the books away and climbs back on my lap only this time she's turned over and she puts her head on my shoulder. We rock for about five minutes as she slowly melts into my arms. Finally to test if she's asleep yet, I whisper to her "are you my baby girl" and if she's awake she whispers back "yes; Aiden baby boy" . Five minutes later I whisper again "can I put you in your bed" and she whispers back "yeah". I put her down in her crib and she lays on her stomach with her rear end up and she goes to sleep.

She still loves to sing. Here are some of the songs she signs these days: (1) bah bah black sheep (2) Nana Beth's "birdy" song (3) ring around the rosey (4) twinkle twinkle little star (5) row row row your boat (6) alphabet song (7) old mcdonald (8) itsey bitsey spider...and that's all I can think of right now. She sings so sweetly, my Dad always says "Sky has a beautiful voice. She's going to be a singer".

I'm going to try to video record her singing one of these days 'cause you just have to hear her say "kwankle, kwankle, little star".

Now that she's more vocal, she enjoys playing with Aiden even more. It's so nice when the two of them sit at their table and draw or paint together. Every now and then you hear them say something and both of them crack up laughing. Hearing them interact and laugh together as if they have inside jokes is so cool.

She's very active. The kid never ever sits still unless we're reading to her. At The Little Gym the instructor uses Sky for demonstrations because she's willing to try new moves. She can do a somersault completely independently. She has excellent balance on the balance beam.

At home, she enjoys building houses out of the couch cushions with her brother. It always starts out as "we're building a house with the couch cushions" but always ends up becoming some acrobatic maze that takes over the entire family room.

She likes to chase her brother around the house. They run from the kitchen to the family room then to the front door and around the dining room and back to the kitchen. Aiden yells "super fast" as he takes the lead and Sky follows with "supa fast". They always end up in the family room floor laughing and falling all over each other.

She loves the outdoors. She's always clamoring to go outside. She likes to walk all around our yard and identify different types of poop. Yup, I said "poop". In our backyard she's identified deer poop, fox poop, giraffe poop, and elephant poop. Sometimes we call her the "poop girl".

She has a ceramic frog in the flower bed that she likes to check on when she's outside. She even blows the frog a kisses and pats it's head.

She likes to play in the creek with her brother. They throw rocks and pretend they're fishing by poking a stick in the water.

a little goat named baja

Aiden and Sky met a little goat named Baja.  Baja lives in Vinton, Virginia behind New York Pizza and belongs to family friends - Antoinette, Frankie, and Antonio.

Sky watching the goat poop "little tiny poops".

Baja was very friendly and very cute.

Sky was picking flowers and feeding it to Baja.

We went to New York Pizza with Bobba Steve and Nana Beth.  Here's Aiden enjoying his pizza. We all love this spot...it's sooo good.

Sky ate only the cheese on a whole piece of pizza.

strange creatures in the grass

What's this one do, Nana Beth?

Nana Beth took us to a metal sculpture shop in Roanoke. They had praying mantis, caterpillars, frogs, crocodiles, lady bugs, and fish.

Sky liked the caterpillar the best.

He was all about the helicopter.

tennis star

Maybe she'll grow up to be a professional tennis player.

But I know for sure she'll always be our little Meeko.

thrasher

Today Aiden broke in his first skateboard.

When he held the skateboard under his arm, it came all the way up to his armpit. I know how to ride a skateboard but I can't even image riding a board that came up to just under my shoulder.

The Spiderman shirt and skateboard was a total coincidence but a cool coincidence.

I can't wait until he lands his first "ollie".

After a while, he discovered a whole new use for the board....which was probably even more fun for a beginner.

Yahooo!!!

into the wild.....of our backyard

Aiden decided to build a bridge over a creek in the woods of our backyard. He worked hard collecting wood.

...very, very hard.

He had to climb over fallen trees to reach big branches.

Further up the path, he discovered another bridge that could be used to cross the creek. Needless to say, he was very excited.

Sky and I helped Aiden collect sticks but we stopped for a quick photo opp too.

Checkin' out the Nissan 300Z

Uncle Dullah's latest toy....the Nissan 300Z. Aiden and Sky loved the T-top.

Gone cruisin' with Daddy. This is too much fun!

Sky enjoying the leather seats.

Aiden and Sky helping Uncle Dullah break in his new car.

Aiden: "Daddy, could you buy me a toy car of this? With a roof that opens?

happy spring 2009!

It's official people. Spring is here to stay!

Thank god, because Aiden and Sky love the outdoor...

spidy

Me: Hey Spiderman, would you like some pancakes for breakfast?

Aiden: and sausage!

Me: Okay, pancakes and sausage coming up for Spiderman.

Aiden: Spiderman eats pancakes?

Me: Yup, and sausage.

Aiden: He doesn't eat bugs?

Me: Oh, maybe he does. He is part spider.

Aiden: No, no, Mommy. When he turns into a spider, then he eats bug but when he's a boy he eats pancakes.

Me: Got it.

perfect nails

She's always asking me if she can use the nail clippers. The girl loves to work on her nails. She can concentrate on her nails forever. I don't get it. I wish I fussed over my nails as much as she fusses over her nails.

Its always nice when you find a comfortable spot to sit down and reach your toe nails. She's such a girly girl already!

pretend birthday

1 sprinkled doughnut + 1 candle = one very happy girl

Ms. Marcy brought sprinkled doughnuts for the kids and made a ho-hum night a very special night.

sky visits platinum

I took Sky into the office with me for a couple of hours. Like Aiden, she loves to visit the office because of the candy dish. I was really impressed with how she had no problem saying hello to people and even used their names. I guess she hasn't hit that shy stage yet...let's hope she skips over that.
