Aiden's seven years old today! He's looking forward to his laser tag birthday party next Saturday. It would seem that this birthday is a bit of "coming of age" birthday...laser tag is how the big kids celebrate a birthday. He's requested to only invite "the boys". According to Aiden, "girls aren't going to want to play laser tag anyway". He doesn't want any cartoon characters or superheroes on his cake..."if I have to have something on my cake, I'd like it to be a soldier...holding a gun."
Aiden is growing up to be quite the little man. He's very bright. He ponders the more complex and abstract questions in science, logic, and society. He worries about earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes and other natural disasters. We were sitting at dinner before hurricane Sandy hit and he was deep in thought. When I asked him what he wanted for dessert he blurted out "for the hurricane not to flood our basement!" He was very interested in looking at weather maps to see if t was possible that the hurricane would miss us. He was talking about how a house could be built stronger to withstand a tree falling on it.
He's in to robotics - he was in a lego robotics camps over the summer where he built robotic vehicles, fans, and even funny robots that twirled.
He's in the earth science club at school - he comes home with all kinds of worms, bugs, and plant life. The science teacher the leads the earth science club calls him a "science buff" - he remembers all kinds of science trivia.
He's an artist to say the least - Aiden could get lost in his projects, drawings, paintings for hours. According to his teachers, Aiden pours over his projects and becomes consumed by every detail. On multiple day project he's the first one in class and the first to resume working on his project.
He builds rockets on the weekends with Daddy and Sky. He puts them together, he sands them, paints them, decorates them...and by decorate I mean serious stuff like model numbers, names, and graphic designs.
His dream building project is an elaborate treehouse. He has all kinds of plans - and if he keeps going with it, he'll build the first tree house with running water, and power...solar power of course.
He's an athlete. He's a captain in his soccer club. He achieved "Bo Black Belt" in Tae Kwon Do. He's running a 5K once a week in running club. He plays on the "extreme sports club" at school - playing hockey, dodgeball, and wall climbing. He's still keeps up with his swim practice and starting next spring he'll be moving up to the higher swim practice bracket. He loves to ride his bike around the neighborhood and around the winding paths of Reston.
He's an outdoorsman - he loves to hike, find and setup the perfect campsite, play with the campfire, wade through streams looking for fish, crayfish, and sometimes "gold" or "quarts crystals". He likes to fish - but only if the fish are biting. He's all about his hiking/camping gear - flashlights, sleeping bag, compass, eating utensils, etc.
He learned to ski this year. The boy went down the advanced slopes on his second day - hitting jumps and going on the half pipe.
He's fearless. The kid has no fear of heights...but I do. He makes my stomach turn at some of the things he does. When we were in Kauai there was a line of people trying to get the courage to jump off of a rock into Queen's Bath. Aiden didn't give it a second thought. As a matter of fact, he asked his dad to give him an extra boost into the air.
He loves cars. His favorite car is a Lamborghini but he plans on building his own car and "it will be electric...won't take gas at all...and it will be fast...and don't worry mom, it will have a backseat too."
He's a law abiding, conscientious citizen. The mere thought of breaking the law makes him angry. Last week I suggested that he ride his bike at the high school track. Well, he saw a sign that said no bikes allowed and he nearly had a breakdown over my suggestion. "Mom, it says right there - "no bikes allowed! You want me to get arrested? You want to break the law? I can't believe you telling me to do something that is not allowed". Needless to say, I regretted the very idea of riding on the high school track.
And generally speaking, he's a wildman - he's loud, he's active, he loves to tease/annoy his brother and sister and he's got a good deal of mischief in him. He goes from activity to activity without getting tired. He loves to watch TV...a little too much. But, he does so while jumping from couch to couch. He and his brother and sister love to watch "The Land of the Lost" (yes, the one from the 70's), The Mysterious Cities of Gold (also from the late 70s or early 80s).
Happy birthday, Aiden. I love everything about you but most of all, I love your heart. You love your family. You're good to your friends. And you care about the environment. You are an amazing 7 year old..and I'm lucky to be you Mommy.
