planting an apple tree

4 comments:

  1. Hey, we just planted an apple tree at our house this past fall. Then we learned that you're really supposed to plant at least 2 so they can pollinate each other. So we planted another one a month or two ago. Now only about 5 years 'til we get apples.

  2. Johnny Appleseed would be so happy to know there are still little sprouts who plant his seeds. I didn't know that about apple trees Todd, so maybe there will be another tree acoming in the Rossi yard soon. Five years is a long time to wait and my hope is that the deer don't get to them before the people do.

Come on apples! How exciting to one day want an apple and go pick it off your tree...super fresh.

Good helpers Daddy. What fun to take a picture with both children next to it every year to watch them both grow.

  3. Todd - The second tree was planted today just about 40 yards away so that the bees can pollinate them. I knew we'd have to wait a couple of years but I wasn't expecting five years! Guess I'll have to be patient.

  4. Maybe you won't have to wait quite that long. Your tree looks a lot bigger than what we planted so maybe it's already a year older than ours. Believe me, I know it is a pain to wait - I just planted some more grapevines too. It took at least 3 years to get my first grapes.

By the way as far as planting 2 trees, some trees can actually pollinate themselves so they don't HAVE to have another one but they do much better with a second one. And the second tree should be a different variety or it doesn't help. And they also are supposed to bloom around the same time so some trees are more compatible than others. Not that I'm trying to make your life more difficult or anything.
